Welcome back to our last 10 weeks of the school year.  I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break.  We missed our 5th graders while they were at camp.  Sounds like it was a great experience for all of them.  A special thank you to each of the chaperones, who made arrangements to be with the kids.  Many memories for all, I’m sure.

This Week

Students will bring home 3rd quarter report cards later this week.  Remember, the district is not giving the traditional reading grade.  Instead, you will receive a separate, comprehensive written report on your child’s reading progress.  STAR Reading testing will take place in two weeks and the MAP math and reading components in May.

READING             This week we will be continuing with SUMMARIZING and finding main ideas within text we’re reading.  For the next couple of weeks we will be practicing and reporting our summaries of what we read during IDR time.  Also, with the start of the new quarter, many of us will be changing our Reading Goals and small focus groups.  Also, new book clubs and 4th quarter reading requirements will be introduced shortly.

WRITING             We begin our new unit, Functional Writing.  We will take a look at many examples of how-to’s, recipes, and directions.  This week we will be writing directions and following written directions as we focus on “the author’s audience” and “breaking down a big idea into steps”.

MATH                   We begin geometry-finding, defining and identifying angles and shapes.  This week we will be staying together, but beginning next week grade levels will split to work on different objectives.

SCIENCE               Energy Transfer begins this week.  This will be a short unit and will include electricity, energy, magnetism and circuits.  We will have a short quiz Friday.  Study guides Thursday.

SS                           We will not have formal ss this week so that we can focus on science.

FRIDAY---Before break your child turned in his/her report on a country.  We are going to have “Around the World” Day on Friday.  Students will need to bring a few artifacts to represent his/her country.  The report and country “items” will be laid out on each student’s desk, so that classmates may walk around and learn about countries of the world.  Items could be pictures, coins, a flag (hand-drawn or real), a sampling of food, etc. You will receive more information on Monday.

Have a fabulous first week back.  Running Club will meet Mondays and Fridays from here on out at 7:45 (hopefully the snow is done…). Club will be cancelled if it’s raining—cross your fingers!!
