What We’ve Been Up To

Our classroom looks like a pet shop with all of our science species.  We have four tanks housing pond snails, guppies, tree frogs, African dwarf frogs, and hermit crabs.  We will be observing them for a few weeks and then the animals will need to find good homes (providing everyone survives all the little hands…).  It is suggested that these animals have a tank with a heater.  Please let me know if your family would be interested in adopting something.  If we end up with a lot of interest, we’ll hold a drawing.  All animals will come home the week of Thanksgiving.

This week

READING             This week we will be starting a new unit-taking a close look at Story Elements—changing character, setting, plot, conflict, etc.  I will be checking in with students to be sure their first quarter reading requirements have been met-one nonfiction, one mystery, two realistic fiction and two choice books.  I am very proud of our kids—we set a reading goal of 40 books this year and most are well on their way!!

WRITING             This week we will continue to polish up and revise one of our seeds into a published piece for a grade.  Author’s Chair will be introduced.

MATH                   We have been reviewing skills from our Data and Probability Unit in order to prepare for students to test Tuesday.  I will have a sign up for individual help on Monday.

SCIENCE               We will be doing lots of observing this week.  We will be learning what traits animals need to survive their habitats.

SS                           As we continue our Government Study, we have been working on Core Democratic Values and making a book to go along with our study.  Later in the week we will learn about the voting process and will take place in an Anderson Mock Election and vote.  Please talk to your child about some of the issues on the ballot and how you decide what to vote for.

Halloween

As you know, our committee has worked hard to plan out party.  If your child is on the committee, please be sure he/she is bringing what was agreed upon.  Please let me know if you are unable.  Thanks!

Friday a note came home about lunch.  The entire school eats at 11:30.  Everyone who is going home for lunch/costume change needs to fill out the form and return.  All students are dismissed through their regular doors at 11:30.  If your child is eating lunch at school, the form needs to be filled out so the cafeteria can plan for bought lunches.

We will start our party right after lunch, breaking for the parade and then back to the party.  Please remember the Anderson dress code and no masks or weapons.

Enrichments

We are so lucky that we have 3 Book Club Leaders this year.  We will have about 12 students working with Mrs. Moberly, Mrs. Sieloff, or Mrs. Martin once a week to read and discuss a book over the course of a few weeks.  The students who are not in a book club this first round will be working in a group with me to work on a specific reading skill.  The next round of book clubs will begin in January.

We also have 2 partner facilitators, Mrs. Lozon and Ms. Derby.  They help partner groups work on reading and writing each week.

Finally we have lots of math helpers—Mrs. Drabczyk, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Pauli.  They play games with us during math workshops, are on hand for individual help, help quiz students on the computer and other tasks.

In addition we have Mrs. Howey, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. DeLisen, and Mrs. Drabczyk copy for us.

We are so grateful to have all of these wonderful ladies help us out.  Thank you for all of your time!!

Reminders

Please keep collecting Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels for us.  The next collection date is in a few days.

We eat snack every morning.  We have a very late lunch and do get hungry midmorning…

If you’d like this newsletter in hard copy form, please let me know.

Have a fantastic trick or treat week!  Welcome back,
