What We’ve Been Up To

I keep forgetting to introduce Mrs. LaFrance to our families.  She is our pre-student teacher, in once a week to earn credit towards her teaching degree at Madonna University.  So awesome to learn from a fresh perspective!

We are over the hump of 5 week grades.  Please remind your student to keep working hard-sometimes this is a hard time of year with Spring on the horizon…

This week

READING                We are starting a new unit in our Making Meaning—Finding the Main Idea and the Supporting details in text.  This will work directly with our nonfiction writing unit.  Our 5 Book Clubs are wrapping it up and will be presenting to the class in the next couple of weeks.

WRITING                We begin official research on our Country Reports this week.  We will be using notecards and will be learning how to cite sources, as well as use our own words in finding info.

MATH                     This week we will be translating decimals to fractions and percentages.  This unit will be about 2 weeks and we will be grade-level specific with these lessons—as objectives are different.

SCIENCE  Wrapping up Force and Motion.  Our Roller Coaster Project will finish by Tuesday and our science test will be on Thursday.  Watch for the study guide.

SS                            We will explore the southern colonies a bit and then students will be creating a realistic colony (based on what they’ve learned about successful colonies).  They will be doing research and be thinking about many components of survival in their colony.  We will work on this project for a few weeks, both at home and at school.

** Exciting news—We have been chosen to participate in a Reading Video Call with a classroom in Kansas.  The video call will take place on Wednesday and will give us a chance to chat with other 5th graders about reading.

Book SWAP

Our class is hosting a 3-5th grade Book Swap on March 22.  Students may trade up to 5 gently used books.  All books are due on the 21st.  Our class will use what they’ve learned about genres to set up the 3-5th grade “Bookstore” in our classroom and will aid students in “shopping”.

Running Club

As you know, I wanted to organize a running club at Anderson.  It has been such a pleasant surprise – with about 100 students signed up and over 30 parent volunteers.  Watch for more info this week.  Very proud of our class for supporting me in this healthy endeavor—about 20 from our class alone!

Have a fabulous week!  Hope you can make it to the Talent Show this week J
